Access to fresh water

Description of activity:

Students write a report of 230 – 250 words on the global issue of access to fresh water. In their report they:

  • describe the importance of fresh water to life on earth
  • outline the problems faced by people around the world in gaining access to fresh water
  • suggest ways to overcome these problems.

Context:

Students have been studying the Focus Area 4G4, Global Issues and the Role of Citizenship. They have learnt about different global geographical issues and the need to promote ecological sustainability.

Outcomes

A student:

4.1 identifies and gathers geographical information 
4.3 uses a range of written, oral and graphic forms to communicate geographical information
4.8 describes the interrelationships between people and environments
4.10 explains how geographical knowledge, understanding and skills combine with knowledge of civics to contribute to informed citizenship

Criteria for assessing learning:

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • describe the importance of access to fresh water to life on earth
  • outline the problems faced by people around the world in gaining access to fresh water
  • offer plausible strategies to overcome the problems
  • communicate their findings in a written report.
