Composing and Performing Music for a Film

There are no Work Samples available for this Activity.

Description of activity

In groups students compose and perform a piece of music for a scene in a silent film on a topic of their own choice. The scene must be 2–3 minutes. The accompanying music must reflect the mood, characters and setting of the story and may be in any appropriate style. Students provide the score of the musical extract used in the scene, give a brief overview of the scene and give an explanation about the mood of the scene and how the music relates to this mood.

Context

Students are familiar with the requirements of film music and understand the importance of music in silent films to communicate mood, characterisation and setting. They have been improvising, composing and arranging musical ideas both individually and in groups in a number of styles using various forms of notation. They have performed musical compositions and arrangements individually and in groups.
