Description of activity

Students are required to design, produce and evaluate a quality solution for a carrying device using textile technology. They will research textile products designed to carry articles and prepare designs of three textile products. A final design will be selected and justified. Students outline the production of the carrying device which they then produce and evaluate. The project will include the quality solution and the folio.

Context

Students have completed a number of technology projects to develop skills in the manipulation and use of a range of materials, equipment and techniques. This unit requires students to develop a project using textile technology.

Outcomes

A student:
4.1.2 describes factors influencing design in the Products area of study
4.1.3 identifies the roles of designers and their contribution to the improvement of the quality of life
4.2.1 generates and communicates creative design ideas and solutions
4.2.2 selects, analyses, presents and applies research and experimentation from a variety of sources
4.4.1 explains the impact of innovation and emerging technologies on society and the environment
4.5.1 applies management processes to successfully complete design projects
4.6.1 applies appropriate evaluation techniques throughout each design project

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • demonstrate understanding of the factors influencing the design of the carrying device, including function, aesthetics and ergonomics
  • demonstrate understanding of the contribution the designer of the researched device has made to the quality of life in that culture
  • show evidence of the development of creative and innovative ideas throughout the development of the design of the textile carry article
  • devise and apply appropriate testing procedures to the selection of materials
  • produce a quality product that meets the selected criteria
  • evaluate the design and production of the textile carry article.
