Ariel has demonstrated a high level of competence in using a range of ceramic techniques to create a three-dimensional portrait in clay. There are references to modernism and the traditional convention of a portrait bust in this artwork which presents a simplified human form including shoulders and a tilted head. There is structural reference in the tonal colour and texture used to establish a mood for the figure but little exploration of decorative possibilities. The glazing has been competently applied to suggest the qualities of a bronze cast but there is some rough handling of the media. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade B standard.

Grade B

The student has a thorough knowledge and understanding of the content and a high level of competence in the processes and skills. In addition, the student is able to apply this knowledge and these skills to most situations.
