Digital worlds – English for the web: Feature article

Description of task

Students create a digital portfolio that includes a feature article that explores the issue of cyber bullying.

Context

During the study of this module, students have had the opportunity to experience, engage with and critique texts accessed through digital technology. They have examined the language, structure, purpose and audiences of these digital texts and further developed their skills in using language appropriately and accurately to compose and engage interactively with texts.

Outcomes

A student:

H1.1 analyses extended and short texts in a range of forms to gain knowledge, understanding and appreciation of how English is used to convey meaning

H1.4 produces a range of texts that demonstrate knowledge, understanding and skills gained in conveying meaning through language and other techniques

H2.3 demonstrates skills in using the language conventions of a variety of textual forms, including literary texts, informative texts and texts for vocational contexts

H3.1 recognises a range of purposes for and contexts in which language is used and selects appropriate text forms, vocabulary, style and tone when writing and speaking for those purposes

H3.2 recognises a range of audiences and selects appropriate text forms, vocabulary, style and tone when writing and speaking for those audiences

Criteria for assessment

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • demonstrate understanding of the concept of digital worlds – English for the web and consider the challenges and responsibilities faced by users of digital technology
  • demonstrate well-developed coherent ideas relevant to the task
  • demonstrate effective control of the vocabulary, style, tone and form of a feature article.

Marking scheme

The following scheme for the marking shows one approach to assigning value to a student’s work.

  • compose a feature article that displays a detailed understanding of the concept of digital worlds and issues related to cyber bullying
  • display sustained, well-structured development of ideas with a clear sense of purpose
  • demonstrate consistent, effective control of language, and effective use of the conventions of the feature article
13–16
  • compose a feature article that displays a sound understanding of the concept of digital worlds and issues related to cyber bullying
  • develop ideas with a clear sense of purpose
  • demonstrate competent control of language, and understanding of the conventions of the feature article
9–12
  • compose a feature article that demonstrates developing understanding of the concept of digital worlds and issues related to cyber bullying
  • display some development of ideas but control of structure may be inconsistent
  • demonstrate developing understanding of the conventions of the feature article with adequate control of language
5–8
  • demonstrate basic understanding of issues related to cyber bullying
  • display undeveloped ideas and may be brief
  • demonstrate basic understanding of the conventions of the feature article and control of language may be variable
1–4
  • attempt to compose a feature article
  • demonstrate elementary control of language with minimal sense of the conventions of the feature article
