Aboriginal Identity and Diversity of Aboriginal Visual Arts

Description of activity

Students select at least two sourced images and/or objects for a class exhibition demonstrating the diversity of Aboriginal culture as represented in Aboriginal visual arts. An activity sheet is provided. Students develop a presentation of about 300 words to explain how these images and/or objects reflect different Aboriginal cultural expressions and their importance to the maintenance of Aboriginal identity.

Context

Students have investigated a range of Aboriginal artworks and discussed their importance to Aboriginal culture. They have discussed the different ways Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people see the purpose of visual arts.

Outcomes

5.2 explains ways in which Aboriginal Peoples maintain their identity
5.3 describes the dynamic nature of Aboriginal cultures
5.11 independently uses a range of research techniques and technologies to locate, select, organise and communicate information and findings

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • use information that is accurate and appropriate
  • display at least two sourced images and/or objects
  • justify the selection of the images and/or objects by explaining, in about 300 words, how they show the different Aboriginal cultural expressions and their importance to the maintenance of Aboriginal identity
  • communicate ideas clearly.
