Description of activity

Students research factors affecting building styles and design a single-storey home to suit a specified site. They analyse the site and generate sketches. Students then prepare a set of drawings to scale using accurate drafting techniques and include a CAD version of the final design with fixtures and furnishings.

Context

Students are undertaking study of the Australian Architecture option module and have an understanding of Australian architectural styles. They have identified the design principles in the development, production and evaluation of drawing techniques and have practised and refined their skills. They have had opportunities to experiment with, and develop elementary skills in the use of, CAD application software.

Outcomes

A student:
5.1.1 communicates ideas graphically using freehand sketching and accurate drafting techniques
5.3.1 identifies, interprets, selects and applies graphics conventions, standards and procedures in graphical communications
5.4.1 manipulates and produces images using computer-based drafting and presentation technologies
5.6.2 evaluates the impact of graphics on society, industry and environment

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • show evidence of research and clear reasoning
  • analyse the selected site and draw freehand sketches while investigating the house design
  • prepare a set of drawings to scale using accurate drafting techniques
  • produce solid shapes and forms using CAD technologies.
