Sam has demonstrated thorough knowledge and understanding of the structure and features of a narrative. Descriptive language has been effectively used but the text is repetitive at times. A variety of time conjunctions and connectives have been used to sequence events, and a coda has been included. A high level of competence in drafting and editing is evident but the punctuation for direct speech could be more accurate. A range of strategies has been used to spell familiar and unfamiliar words. To improve, Sam should include a clearer complication and try not to rely too heavily on direct speech to convey ideas. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade B standard midway through Stage 2.

The student has a thorough knowledge and understanding of the content and a high level of competence in the processes and skills. In addition, the student is able to apply this knowledge and these skills to most situations.

    Students write well-structured literary and factual texts in terms of topic, purpose, audience and language by drafting, revising and proofreading. They use accurate sentence structure, grammatical features and punctuation conventions to produce various texts and spell familiar and unfamiliar words using knowledge of letter-sound correspondence, common letter patterns and a range of other strategies. Students use joined letters when writing in NSW Foundation Style and develop basic desktop publishing skills. Students explain how they structure their writing to achieve intended purposes.
