Use of Language in Character Creation

Description of activity

Students discuss how Tennessee Williams uses language in The Glass Menagerie to create a character. They refer to characters in a scene they have been workshopping in class. Students include in the discussion their approach to developing a convincing Southern American accent and explain why its use is integral to the play.

Context

Students have had experience in preparing scripted drama for performance. They have explored how to develop and portray characters and to build a specific profile for a character. They have discussed how a playwright uses language to create a character.

A Student:

5.1.3 devises, interprets and enacts drama using scripted and unscripted material or text
5.3.1 responds to, reflects on and evaluates elements of drama, dramatic forms, performance styles, dramatic techniques and theatrical conventions

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • discuss how Tennessee Williams uses language in The Glass Menagerie to create characters
  • explain why the use of a Southern accent is integral to the portrayal of a character in The Glass Menagerie
  • explain their approach to developing a Southern accent.
